SELECTED AS ONE OF MISSISSIPPI’S MOST LIVABLE COMMUNITIES FOR 1996 BY THE MISSISSIPPI MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION AND
THE CLARION LEDGER

In making the SOS (Save Outdoor Sculpture) inventory of the State of Mississippi, it was determined that BELZONI has more outdoor sculpture per capita than any other city in Mississippi.

Originally known as “Greasy Row” because of the row of saloons along the bank of the Yazoo River, Belzoni was named for Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Belzoni was selected county seat for Humphreys County, the last county to be formed in the State of Mississippi in 1918. Humphreys County is known as “The Catfish Capital of the World,” with more acres of farm raised catfish than any other county.

Belzoni carries the distinction of HEART OF THE DELTA. It is located in the middle of the Yazoo-Mississippi Rivers Delta and was chartered in 1895. Recently celebrating its first 100 years, the city commemorated this event with the dedication of the Centennial Green Park. Located in downtown Belzoni and next to The Catfish Capitol, the park helps to revitalize the downtown area. Signature bricks add charm and connect the past with the present.

The City of Belzoni is a small Delta town, population 2663 in the 2000 census, with a thriving central business district. Twenty years ago the City of Belzoni embarked on a redevelopment program for the downtown area with the replacement of sidewalks using brick and exposed aggregate, the planting of nineteen Linden trees, concrete poles with sodium vapor lighting, which was new at that time, and more appropriate parking. The community demonstrates its great sense of pride by its well kept residential neighborhoods and its desire for the city to help keep its streets clean and provide those special amenities that only small towns can offer. The community is dedicated to its citizens and a quality of life for everyone.
