In making the SOS (Save Outdoor Sculpture) inventory of the State of Mississippi, it was determined that BELZONI has more outdoor sculpture per capita than any other city in Mississippi. Originally known as Greasy Row because of the row of saloons along the bank of the Yazoo River, Belzoni was named for Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Belzoni was selected county seat for Humphreys County, the last county to be formed in the State of Mississippi in 1918. Humphreys County is known as The Catfish Capital of the World, with more acres of farm raised catfish than any other county.
